UN CHIEF'S VISIT

Reds to petition UN chief over killings

The red-shirt movement is preparing to petition UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon over the killings of 91 people in the military crackdowns of April and May during his visit tomorrow.

"We just want to tell the UN secretary-general the truth about what happened in this country," Jatuporn Promphan, a red-shirt leader and an MP from the opposition Pheu Thai Party, said yesterday.

Some 10 representatives of the group would seek an opportunity to hand their petition to him in person, he said.

They would also urge the UN chief to help in the release of political prisoners in Thailand.

Some members would gather at the United Nations building on Ratchadamnoen Avenue, but not in big numbers.

"Don't worry, most of the red shirts will gather politely outside the building only," he said.

The movement's legal team was preparing documents, pictures and other evidence to support their petition, he said.

The subjugation of the political protest in the capital led to the deaths of 91 people, mostly civilians.

The protesters accuse the government of using military force to kill them while the government claims the demonstrators were terrorists and were slain by unknown armed men in black suits.

It is unclear who will take responsibility for the slaughter as the government's probe has made little progress. Many red leaders and protesters are now in custody on terrorism charges. The government has extended the state of emergency in Greater Bangkok to prevent the resurgence of red-shirt rallies.

The red shirts do not look for any response whatsoever from the UN chief. They just want to tell their story to the international community, Jatuporn said.

"The case will be submitted to the World Court and we will do what people in the civilised world should do," he said.

Ban will arrive here on the first leg of his Asian tour, which will take him next to Cambodia, Vietnam for the Asean Summit and China.

He will meet Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva at Government House to discuss mutual relations and cooperation. He will also commemorate UN Day with the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and other UN agencies at the Escap building.

91 death is a sacrify for a noble cause.

Else a lot more people could be killed, if the Red were allowed to continue.

I cannot fortell the future, but I can just imagine some of thousand of possible out come if the redare not controlled/put down.

At best, it would turn into a mini China Mao communist state, which after a period of hardship and culture revolution (caterpillar before the butterfly), prepared itself to become the world's second biggest economy.

At worst, it can become another Khmer rough like regime, where millions more can be killed.

I'd love to be there when he explains how 10 soldiers were killed and 400+ injured. Explanations on the numbers killed and injured by RPG rounds would be good too.

A lot of the injuries comes from tear gas.

I suppose that would explain most of the 1400 injuried protesters too then.

There is an old sentence, "the U.N. is not my father", which keeps occurring to me, I wonder whether any of the Bloody Red-Shirt leaders can recall who once said that exceedingly-silly thing ? B)

Probably. I don't know about the killed and what did exactly killed them, but if i remember right a significant number of these injured in the news reports resulted from the use of tear gas.

edit. to add

I don't mean injured because the teargas came with some explosives added like it was the case october 2008 against the PAD.

Just 'injuries' that resulted from exposure to the gas in the 'tear gas'. Nasty injuries enough that people had to see a doctor or a short stay in the hospital.

"We just want to tell the UN secretary-general thetruth about what happened in this country," Jatuporn Promphan, a red-shirtleader and an MP from the opposition Pheu Thai Party, said yesterday.

 Well, that'll be a first.

                                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some members would gather at the United Nations building on Ratchadamnoen  Avenue, but not in big numbers.

No more crap estimate of millions then? Running out ofsupport?

                                    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Don't worry, most of the red shirts will gatherpolitely outside the building only," he said.

A tactic employed way too late.

                                 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is unclear who will take responsibility for the slaughteras the government's probe has made little progress.

TIT. Nobody will. Since truth is a stranger in Thailandthat any progress is made at all would be remarkable.

                               ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The red shirts do not look for any response whatsoever fromthe UN chief.

 Then why bother?

                                                          ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They just want totell their story to the international community, Jatuporn said.

So use TV and the Internet. Anything uttered by Jatupon is more fairy tale than story.

                                                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The case will be submitted to the World  Court and we will do what people in the civilisedworld should do," he said.

As against burning down and looting parts of the commercial sector of the city?

Does he mean the ICC or - World Court (arcade game), a tennis arcade game

I'd love to be anywhere when any explanations are made of any of the deaths and injuries by either the red shirts or the government. Guess I'll have to wait for the official report, but with comments like "the government claims the demonstrators were terrorists and were slain by unknown armed men in black suits", it seems like minds have already been made up, at least in some sections of the press. Or was that an official statement from the government or Army?. No army / security officials were involved in any of the civilian deaths, it was all down to the "unknown armed men in black suits" ?

Rumour has it lots of people can't even point out Thailand on a map.

As Mr. Ban arrives and leaves Tuesday, and has a busy agenda (e.g. lunch) I guess the UDD delegation will get their 10 minutes of fame.

The material they plan to hand over might be slightly one-sided, but then the government already passed on their view.

Mr. Ban will probably murmur some polite phrases, suggest this internal problem should be solved peacefully, blabla blabla, etc. Then he'll be off to Vietnam for the ASIAN meeting. Remember ASIAN, the bunch of countries who put as item 1 in the charter 'non-interference in internal matters'. Mind you some probably still a bit p--off with the UDD / red-shirts storming the venue in Pattaya in 2009.

As for 'all down to' that's your interpretation which I cannot support. Mind you things really started when unknowns started shooting almost indiscriminately on the 10th of April when the Army tried to disband the protest site. A few grenades lopped on a colonel with staff also didn't help to keep things manageble. In some countries the army would have cracked down with full force there and then, but here they defended themselves and disentangled.

Controlled/limited Freedom of speech, blocked internet sites, forced closure of TV, radio stations, magazines and newspapers; imprisoned for speaking on government banned topics. Wealth and opportunity only shared among those in power.

This sounds familiar? It could be China, North Korea, or even Iran. Unfortunately it is sad to say this is Thailand today.

You fear that Thailand will be a mini communist state under the Reds, what do you think it is today?

'meta amphetamine high soldiers' ? You may be confused with the red guards on tablets and liquor!

If the army were really going rampaging the 91 deaths and 1800+ injured would ONLY be red-shirts and WITHIN a single day. Now we have a mix of reds, army, police, bystanders AND over a period April 10th to May 19.

not about peaceful protesters or terrorists or even the Zen building.

"As for 'all down to' that's your interpretation which I cannot support". Fair enough, that's your viewpoint, but I think that is the only interpretation to be made of a statement that reads

"the government claims the demonstrators were terrorists and were slain by unknown armed men in black suits"

Therefore the unknown armed men in black suits killed the demonstrators - If the black shirts killed the demonstrators it follows that the Army did not.

How can you argue against my "interpretation" of that statement, unless red shirts don't count as civilians?

Judging form the stuff coming out on wikileaks it could also be what the authorities in a lot of other countries would like too if not even partially in place already

It is easy to argue against your invalid arguments. You mix your metaphors and put snippets together as if they are related and/or true.

The government never said 'all demonstrators are terrorists', more like 'there are terrorists amongst the protesters' and 'armed militants'. 'If black shirts killed demonstrators' doesn't say 'all', so there were a few left for the army.

In general your comments tend to obfuscate, confuse the matter with semi-logical statements and suggestions without really and plainly stating 'red = good, government = bad'. Trolling, closet red-shirt supporter, one of the better ones amongst them.

I really do not know what I have done to upset you. I am not trolling, you seem to have already made your mind up about my comments and treat all as biased towards one particular faction. I say read again my post where I said that I would welcome explanations of the deaths from either the government or the red shirts. I haven't seen credible explanations from either party yet, apart from the one friendly fire incident involving the the army. The quotes that I have commented on are directly taken from the newspaper article in the OP. I'm not making them up. In my original post I asked the question as to whether the government or army had even made those remarks.
