US and Japan sign Open Skies Memorandum of Understanding on air transportation

TOKYO, JAPAN (BNO NEWS) -- The United States and Japan on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will establish an Open Skies air transportation relationship between the two nations.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by U.S. Ambassador to Japan, John Roos, and Japanese Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Sumio Mabuchi. The pact is expected to be finalized in the coming weeks.

The provisions of the Memorandum of Understanding will be incorporated into the upcoming agreement on Open Skies that is expected to be reached through an exchange of diplomatic notes. With the agreement, the United States intends to strengthen and expand its strong trade and tourism links with Japan.

The agreement will also benefit American and Japanese businessmen and travelers by the expansion of air service and the encouraging vigorous price competition by airlines that will carry the agreement. In addition, the deal will safeguard aviation safety and security.

The U.S. Department of Transportation already awarded Tokyo Haneda International Airport a permit to American Airlines for providing service from New York, Delta Air Lines for flights from Los Angeles and Detroit, and Hawaiian Airlines for a route from Honolulu.
