Young lovers videotaped

Police have arrested a senior education official on suspicion he spied on and videotaped young couples having sex at a secluded mountain location, and produced copies with intention to sell.

Police put 52-year-old Somboon Preedangkul under surveillance at his hide-out in woods on Khao Kaenchan mountain, in the Ratchaburi provincial capital, after receiving a tip-off.

He was reportedly observed taping young couples, mostly students, having sex in broad daylight.

Police arrested Mr Somboon on Tuesday afternoon, after using their informants to lure him to the site. However, an accomplice who police believed was an official at the Ratchaburi administrative organisation was able to flee with a video camera.

Mr Somboon confessed to spying on and videotaping young couples, but denied producing copies with intention to sell.

Police later seized a computer capable of duplicating VCDs, and 21 pornographic tapes, from Mr Somboon's home, along with a second video camera.

District police chief Pol Col Petcharat Saengchai said patrols would be increased to ensure couples did not have sex on the mountain, on which stands a popular Buddha image.

Sex education with twist in Thailand

A SENIOR official of Thailand's Education Ministry has been arrested on charges that he secretly videotaped high school and university students having sex in a secluded jungle clearing near Bangkok, produced copies of the videos and intended to sell them, news reports said yesterday.

Somboon Preedangkul, 52, was put under police surveillance after a tipoff that he was using a hide-out on Kaenchan mountain in Ratchaburi province, 90 kilometres south-west of Bangkok, to spy on students and other young couples who used the spot to have sex.

He was arrested on Tuesday after he was observed videotaping couples having sex in broad daylight, according to police quoted by the Bangkok Post.

An alleged accomplice, also believed to be a local government official, was reported to have escaped with a video camera.

Police said Somboon confessed to spying and videotaping young couples but he denied charges that he produced copies of the videos with intent to sell.

A search of the suspect's home turned up a second video camera, a computer capable of duplicating VCDs and 21 pornographic videotapes.

The case followed a scandal last year when another education official sold copies of video cds he produced after secretly recording sexual encounters of high school students in the neighbouring province of Kanchanaburi.

Parents of the students complained to police when the videos went on sale at local markets for 150 baht ($A5.10) each.
