No `service' at Thai massage parlours

Spas and traditional massage parlours will be tightly regulated from early next year to ensure they do not serve as fronts for brothels, Public Health Minister Sudarat Keyurapan said yesterday.

Mrs Sudarat said ministerial regulations would be introduced to further regulate spas and massage parlours after the entertainment venues bill became law in early 2004.

The bill would usher in laws that classify spas and legitimate massage parlours separately from those supervised by the Interior Ministry.

Mrs Sudarat said the stricter controls will help authorities clamp down on massage parlours offering sex services.

Under the regulations, spas and parlours would be licensed and required to meet high hygiene standards, she said.
