I'll Opt For Losing Election If It Restores Peace: Abhisit

"BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva stressed Wednesday that he preferred to lose a general election rather than winning it and causing violence."

So if there was a choice

- lose a general election

or

- win a general election and cause violence

k. Abhisit would choose for loosing a general election.

Now pay attention, dear class:

- a general election, not necessarily the next

- choose for loosing, not will loose (and neither: will win)

Apart from that I think it's typical politician's speak which can be used to fertilise the garden.

Bambi, it is just a The Nation article, Abhisits words a probably just a translation from Thai into English and the writer and translator of the article had probably not your fine details in mind.

Don't handle it like a Bible student or the undiluted word of the prophet Brian.

Apart from that i agree with your last sentence.

Prophet Brian?

Is there a Brian in your Bible/Koran/Buddhist script?

Prophet Brian?

Is there a Brian in your Bible/Koran/Buddhist script?

Please refer to the important work of philosophy, The Life of Brian. I am certain PM Abhisit musty have come across this work in between cricket matches and tea parties.

If you really think Abhisit is so bad, who do you think would be better to lead Thailand into the future?

George W. Bush is looking for a job!

I live three miles from GWB and I can assure you he is not looking for a job. He is busy selling his new book.

The only ones wanting the PM position are those who would loot the country. Because Khun A was raised abroad, he hasn't had corruption ingrained into him. Yes, he does 'row the boat' for the thieves in his govt. but he's nobody's puppet as the PT party are all Taksin's puppets. I am not in the least worried that Dr. Thaksin will ever return to power; the Army won't allow that. If the PT party returns to power, the effect on Thailand will be the same a if Dr. Thaksin were in power because he will be pulling the strings on his puppets and the country will be looted the same and Dr. T will profit the same. The BJT is still wedded to the old 'spoils system' (bus leases, computer leases, etc.) and it would be good for the ordinary citizen (red, yellow, farmer, shopworker, laborers, etc.) it Thailand can move away from the corruption and crony capitalism of the past. I see Abhisit as the best hope for this country to move forward and upward. He is doing more for the 'underclass' than Dr. Thaksin ever dreamed of because Dr. Thaksin only did the minimum for poor peoplle to get elected and keep power.

I copied the below from this forum. I don't have attribution but the statement is still true.

Abhisit's 2011 social welfare programs (this is merely leading up to his "Cradle to Grave Welfare Socialist State" eta 2016 *if they let him give it to them lol):

Plan to increase civil servants' salaries 5 per cent Q2 2011. The pay raise, which will cost an additional Bt30 billion on top of the present Bt500-billion salary expenditure, will take effect in April 2011.

The government is considering extending cost-of-living measures for low-income earners, including relief from energy costs, while preparing to forgive a massive amount of farmers' debt.

Free electricity, bus and train rides for low-income earners, costs the public Bt4.5 billion every three months.

Originally, in 2008, when the price of oil spiked to more than US$140 per barrel for the first time, the Samak government initiated a total of six cost-of-living measures to help the poor.

Over six months, it spent about Bt40 billion.

Then, the Abhisit government adopted five such measures - free electricity, buses, trains and water and a freeze on the price of cooking gas.

The cooking-gas subsidy was dropped in March, but the Energy Ministry plans to resurrect it for another six months, with the Oil Fund expected to spend another Bt6 billion on subsidies.

On farmers' debts, the Cabinet approved a programme last week under which four state banks will grant a 50-per-cent reduction of debts owed by farmers, provided they join a related career-development plan.

Farmers accepting the offer will be allowed to clear their remaining debts over 15 years with special interest terms equalling the banks' minimum retail rate minus 3 percentage points.

Currently, there are about 80,000 farmers with non-performing loans.

Earlier, the Abhisit government approved a huge subsidy covering 15 years of free schooling. It applies to free textbooks, uniforms and other learning materials.

About Bt6 billion is to be spent on free textbooks; Bt4.5 billion on school uniforms; Bt2 billion on learning materials and Bt4 billion on special activities. Private schools will get Bt1.5-billion worth of state subsidies.

The 2010 budget for free schooling is Bt73 billion.

The government is also planning to introduce a savings-matching programme for senior citizens, covering more than 3,000 communities around the country in which it will set aside funds to match the savings of old people. Currently, the government is providing Bt500 per month to elderly people.

The cost of the farmer-income insurance scheme is estimated to be Bt30 billion annually, covering 3.19 million rice farmers (Bt28.35 billion); 379,785 cassava farmers (Bt2.43 billion); and 379,304 corn farmers (Bt5.63 billion).

Earlier, the government also initiated a programme to relieve the debt burden on poor people caused by high-interest loans.

About 1.19 million debtors registered with the government, representing a combined debt of Bt122 billion.

From January 2009 to April 2010, the government provided tax incentives for property buyers and businesses totalling Bt34.73 billion. It has now restored the special-business tax of 3.3 per cent after reducing it to 0.1 per cent; restored the property transfer fee to 2 per cent from 0.01 per cent; and restored the mortgage registration fee to 1 per cent from 0.01 per cent.

On funeral services for the poor, the Social Development and Human Security Ministry has allocated Bt44.13 million to pay for the funeral rites of 22,063 people who have died of natural causes. Over the full fiscal year, it expects to spend Bt475 million on funeral services for 237,663 poor people.

In addition, the government is reportedly planning a savings programme for newborn babies, who will be entitled to a monthly Bt500 state-sponsored saving programme until they are 18. This will cost the government Bt6,000 per newborn per year.

lol this is the "lapdog of the elites". Who's doing a stunningly cheeky job of moonlighting as the planet's most generous socialist.

But they're not interested in such generosity. They want the guy who 'speaks' to them. In their language. Tells them:

1. All debt gone in 6 months!

2. Next 6 months, I'm gonna make a fortune so nobody has to work!

3. After that, I'm gonna make jobs for your children!

4. Worried about floods? Don't be. I'm gonna build a dam around the whole of Bangkok!

5. We're gonna share the wealth!

6. We're gonna eliminate poverty!

7. And every child will take their own computer to school!

To the critics, what would you have had him say?

Perhaps something like Thaksin, if my side doesn't win, we will destroy the country and burn down Bangkok?

Hi Jingthing

Another really telling point .......except .......... erh.........."Thaksins side" has won all recent elections ... well all this century anyway.

Through proven corruption and vote buying and setting up phoney parties etc. Yes, then, you are correct.

You said Abhisit doesn't have a mandate. How is he different to previous PMs.

Now you're making love to your toaster!

Dude, can you answer the question without attacking the questioner?

"Will definitely be a general election next year"

Even a 5 years old knew that.

Election next year is by default. No one change that, not even him. So no one in this world have the authority to change it either, not even the k..g. So i don't see why Mark has to promise the world of something that is going to happen anyway?

http://inside.org.au...isit-vejjajiva/

According to the constitution, an election is due by the end of 2011 and Abhisit will probably hold on to power for as long as he possibly can.

What you are saying then, is that all the people who have posted over the last few months on Thaivisa, expressing doubt that there will be elections next year, must have been computer savy, politically interested 4 year olds?

Without wanting to sound rude, and without wanting to agree with someone whose interests usually amount to winding others up (yin dee khrap Khun Chantorn!), the post said that there are 5 year olds who know that there would be an election next year - which is right.

Those who doubted this were - well - wrong/brainwashed/uneducated/etc. Unfortunately this argument works this time, although it normally doesn't. Sorry.

She mentioned nothing about computer savy, politically-interested 4 year olds but my gut instinct tells me that, if they are computer-savvy and politically-interested by the age of 4, they know at least as much as your average 5 year old.

I think the 'computer savvy' and 'poltically interested' come from the fact that they are on a internet political forum.

I wonder if the UDD would now respond to Abhisit's statement with the threat "If it turns out that Abhisit is re-elected, we will bomb Bangkok."

If such a threat is made prior to the election, would Abhisit then "opt" to lose the election just to ensure that there would be no terrorism? That would basically be surrendering to terrorists.

Agreed.

"Opt"???

Like it's got anything to do with him anymore.I think he's finally realised he's not running the country and is looking for a way out.

election? Why does he keep assuring us there will be one next year?Is he worried that there might be a coup before then?

What does he know that the Thai electorate don't?

If you check this forum there are lots of people questioning there will be an election. Some Thais do the same. So unfortunately again and again the PM feels a need to re-ensure the people 'yes, there will be elections'. If he doesn't people start to ask why he doesn't say anything, what does he know we don't. It's called a 'no-win' situation, the government will be blamed whatever they say or not say.

you may wonder why someone wants to be a politician.

Or why someone wants to be an honest politician in Thailand......

Sad part is, he is the only honest one and has no support from all the others. They just hang in to get payment benefits from businesses. ohmy.gif

You make a statement that gets responded to with a few details, but nothing personal, just questions asking for clarifications.

And you respond with statements like:

I could go into your response and explain why your argument is so facile - but your avatar sums my feelings up completely.

Dear oh dear - I said your argument was facile - it actually is fallacious - you don't seem to realise what I'm talking about especially in terms of MANDATE - now if you were to present an argument that was relevant, intelligent or even remotely showed some understanding of what I said I'd answer but it seems you really don't grasp the proposal in the first place - to respond would be to engage in a pointless round of gainsaying - so in your own words"Why bother"?

Then you get asked a very simple question, and respond with:

You said Abhisit doesn't have a mandate. How is he different to previous PMs.

Now you're making love to your toaster!

Why do you make statements that you can't back up or explain? I actually find that is a very common trait of a pro-red poster on TVF.

In terms of the academic darling concept mandate, after the last election no party had a mandate as no party had half the seats and nowhere near half the electorate. Happens a lot in western places too but it doesnt stop parties or people elected with 30% or less of the electorate behind them from doing whatever they want. That is a valid criticism of any representative democracy. Mandate though is a term hand jobbed on about by academics or stressed by those who dont like who is in power handjobbing on about they have no mandate or by those who cream themselves at who is in power handjobbing on about what a mandate they have. Truth is mandate is an utterly irrelevant concept as poltics is about power and whoever can force themselves into power will do whatever they can to advantage themselves and their big money backers. That is demmocracy

He will be serving a 5 year ban anyway so it's a pointless statement from him.

So who will we have in power ?- because if Abhisit deserves 5 years Thaksin and Juthaporn should get the death penalty!!

Your crystal ball seems to work different from mine, dear chap.

As I said before, how can Thailand ever be a democracy when the "norm" for changing a government is either by coup or a court case??

But then what would you expect when the only alternative is a bunch of terrorist murdering puppets supporting a deposed criminal!

What a silly stayement SergeiY always good for a laugh.

THis may come as a shock to some but, one of the key elements of being a dishonest politician is to let as many people as possible think you are honest

So, what does that have to do with our current PM Abhisit ?

You mean there aren't that many people who think Abhisit is honest? so that 'let as many people as possible think ...' have noting to do with Abhisit.

Can someone translate SergeiYs posts for me ? I only speak English, Germa, French and a bit of Thai!!

well he also said there would be an election this November to stop the troubles :ermm: maybe he just forgot, again, or maybe he is lining his pockets as quickly as possible like erm erm let me think! same shit different day.

Anyone who followed the events of the Bangkok Burning even casually knows what a totally false assertion this is.

Obviously he hasnt been a busy bee!! Or he wouldnt make himself look daft with ridiculous statements!!

Anyone still believing a single word coming out of Abhisit's mouth can only be classified as a delusional fool .

Where as that nice man Mr Thaksin can be classified as what??...........................Know which one I prefer and hes not a deposed coward, murdering criminal!!!!!!!!!!

Sssshhh. Don't upset the abhisit fan club of Thai Visa. They have a habit of frothing at the mouth and having cyber tantrums when such unpleasantries are uttered.

Just repeat after me, The Emperor's clothes are beautiful.........................

Shhhhh - the emperor Thaksins red clothes are beautiful as he orders another public insurrection with his stolen money!!
