At least 60 killed after building collapses during Afghan wedding

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least 60 people were killed on Wednesday after a building collapsed during a wedding in northern Afghanistan, the Red Cross said.

The collapse took place as a large group of people gathered for a wedding at a three-story building in the Jilga district of Baghlan province. One of the floors then collapsed.

Rescue crews rushed to the spot and reported finding 60 bodies, most of them women and children. Approximately 40 others were injured, some seriously.

The cause of the collapse was not immediately known and authorities are investigating the incident. Afghan houses, however, are often weak structures made with mud and wood. Most of them are constructed with little or no oversight of civil authorities.
