WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- A 34-year-old Virginia man was arrested on Wednesday on accusations he was plotting to carry out multiple bombings at Metrorail stations in the Washington, D.C. area, the Justice Department said.

Prosecutors said the man, identified as Farooque Ahmed of Ashburn, believed he was in contact with members of al-Qaeda who were planning to bomb Metrorail stations in the Washington, D.C. area. In fact, however, these al-Qaeda members were U.S. law enforcement.

Officials described Ahmed as a U.S. citizen born in Pakistan, but there was no immediate indication that he was an actual member of a terrorist organization.
