MOGADISHU, SOMALIA (BNO NEWS) -- Two Somali girls were executed in front of hundred of residents by anti-government militant group al-Shabaab, which had accused the girls of spying, local media reported Friday.

The two girls, aAyan Mohamed Jama, 18, and Huriyo Ibrahim, 15, from Somalia's Hiiran region, were executed by a firing squad in the central town of Beledweyne as al-Shabaab regional commander Sheikh Yusuf Alil Ugas said they were spying for Ehtiopian and Somali governments.

"If we see anybody who is spying, he/she will face the sharia law," Ugas said.

As the shocked crowd witnessed the incident, several people said the group would not negotiate, which is just another human rights abuse in the region. The two girls were veiled and shouting as the execution took place, witnesses said.

Somalia has not had a solid government since warlords overthrew long-time dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991, while al-Shabaab, which also has links with al-Qaeda, has maintained control over most of the capital

As violence continues to spread throughout the African country, almost 68,000 Somalis have fled this year to other countries in the region. As of the end of August, there were more than 614,000 Somali refugees and over 1.4 million displaced within the country.
