I'm in no way whatsoever a translator but every now and again i get given some document in Thai to translate into English. I sometimes get asked to do English - Thai but i give them a big body swerve cos my Thai is just not up to scratch for that. I am, however, a native English speaker and after studying the document for sometime (usually quite a long time) i can kind of get the gist of things and put it into coherent English. My latest piece given to me is about Nora โนรา which is performance art from the south of Thailand. Basically traditional Thai dancing with some traditional music chucked in there too. The document is a brief description of what Nora is all about followed by a list of all the pieces of the costume worn by the dancers with their description. Then there is a list of all the musical instruments used accompanied with their description. Unfortunately i left my best dictionary at school the other day and have been using online resources and computer dictionaries to aid me. I've managed to get most of it translated but there are just a few words i can't make head nor tail of, but that's perhaps due to the amount of beer consumed yesterday. Anyway if anyone has a good translation for these items of clothing and one type of drumstick thing it would be most appreciated as one of our students will be talking about this subject in a video conference call to South Korea this coming Tuesday. Lots of time to prepare as always. I currently have these words written in English with the Thai sound.

Thanks Klons,

I guess i'll just have to use Panung as there is perhaps no English word for some of these things.

"tube skirt"

Having never worn one i had no idea what a tube skirt was until i googled it. I don't think it fits here as the tube skirt is quite tight fitting whereas the panung is quite a lengthy piece of material and when it's eventually fitted it ends up looking almost like a pair of trousers.
