Crime 55 Illegal Foreign Workers Detained at Chinese Construction Site in Sriracha
Picture courtesy of พัทยา จุดเกิดเหตุ Authorities in Chonburi launched a crackdown, raiding a construction site linked to a Chinese development project and arresting 55 illegal migrant workers, including engineers and labourers. The operation, led by Mr. Phuwakorn Tosingkorn, Director of the Chonburi Provincial Employment Office, was carried out in coordination with officials from the Central Employment Registration Office, the Chonburi Labour Office, Immigration Police, the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), and the Anti-Human Trafficking Division (Sub-Division 2). The raid targeted a factory construction site in Moo 5, Khao Khansong Subdistrict, Sriracha District. Officials discovered 27 Chinese nationals, 23 Myanmar nationals (21 men and 2 women), and 5 Cambodian nationals, all working without proper permits or in violation of the terms of their work visas. All 55 individuals were immediately detained and transferred to Bo Win Police Station to face legal action for violating the Royal Decree on the Management of Foreign Workers’ Employment, B.E. 2560 (2017) and its subsequent amendments. Offences fall under Section 8 of the Act, with penalties outlined in Section 101. Authorities have also filed charges against the employer for hiring foreign nationals without valid work permits or assigning them to unauthorised roles, in contravention of Section 9 of the same Royal Decree, punishable under Section 102. Officials stressed that further investigations are underway to locate and prosecute those responsible for the illegal employment practices, aiming to ensure strict compliance with Thai labour laws. This operation forms part of an ongoing nationwide effort to regulate migrant labour and crack down on human trafficking and exploitation in the construction sector. This initiative is part of a sweeping electoral reform effort that requires parliamentary approval but aims to align voting rights with Scotland and Wales, where 16- and 17-year-olds already vote in devolved elections. Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner emphasised the importance of engaging youth in democracy, stating, "We're breaking down barriers to ensure broader participation in UK democracy." The changes come after a notably low voter turnout of 59.7% in the 2024 general election, the lowest since 2001, prompting calls for increased civic engagement. Research from the House of Commons library suggests that allowing 16-year-olds to vote does not significantly alter election outcomes, though they tend to vote more actively than when first eligible at 18. Labour, facing a decline in popularity after a sweeping victory just a year ago, had previously pledged this reform as part of their campaign. In addition to lowering the voting age, the proposed reforms would expand acceptable voter ID options to include UK-issued bank cards and digital formats like driving licences and Veteran Cards. To combat potential foreign interference, the government also plans stricter rules on political donations, scrutinising contributions exceeding 22,000 Thai Baht (£500). The proposed reforms represent a significant shift in the UK's democratic landscape, potentially energising young voters and reshaping future electoral dynamics.
