ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least 6 people were killed after a suspected U.S. drone strike hit the northwestern tribal region of Pakistan, officials said.

Pakistani intelligence officials said three U.S. drone aircraft launched six missiles and struck a house in the North Waziristan region, considered Pakistan's premier fortress of militants and the recent target of increased in U.S. drone strikes. The strikes killed six people, allegedly militants.

The strike was conducted around 12 kilometers (8 miles) from the region's main town, Miranshah, which borders the eastern Afghanistan city of Khost, where U.S.-led troops have been fighting insurgents.

Miranshah is near the Afghan border and is located in the region where U.S. officials have constantly targeted suspected militant groups believed to be conducting attacks on U.S. and foreign troops. The Haqqani network is known to be operating in the area. The network is run by Sirajuddin Haqqani, son of former Taliban minister Jalaluddin Haqqani.

Thursday's drone strike marks the week's second. Over 40 strikes have been conducted in the region since September 3, killing approximately 220 people.
