A Guide To Buddhist Monasteries/meditation Centres/study Groups

Many members have posted to this forum asking about places to learn or practice Buddhist meditation in Thailand. To make it easier to find this info quickly, here's a link to "A Guide to Buddhist Monasteries and Meditation Centres in Thailand":

http://www.kammatthana.com/a_guide_to_budd...onasteries_.htm

Sponsored by the World Fellowship of Buddhists, the booklet was originally written by an American Buddhist monk living in Thailand (Phra Sunno, aka Jack Kornfield) and has been updated twice by layperson Bill Weir. The last update happened in the late 80s so some of the information is quite out of date. Nevertheless many of the monasteries and centres listed here remain still more or less as described.

Here also is a link to Buddhanet's updated list of places to practice in Thailand:

Dhamma Study Group

Around since the 1970s, probably the oldest dhamma discussion group in Bangkok. The group meets every Saturday between 2 and 4pm in Thonburi, and is attended by foreigners as well as Thais. They don't practice formal meditation and the main focus of the discussions is the Abhidhamma Pitaka.

Travel by Train There are a number of trains leaving Bangkok every evening from about 17.30 until 22.30. Sleepers can be booked in advance. The trains arrive in Chaiya, the nearby market town, in the early morning, unless they are late - which is usual. From the Chaiya station, take the light blue song taew to Suan Mokkh for 6 baht. They leave regularly between dawn and dusk. Or you can hire a truck for about 80 baht. There are also trains coming up from Had Yai and Malaysia, but the arrival times are inconvenient. You may want to get off at the Surat Thani station (actually in Pun Pin, twelve km west of Surat Thani town proper) and spend the night. Catch a bus in the morning. (See below.) Travel by Bus

On the First Sunday of every month the WFB offers a program on Buddhism conducted in English, free of charge for the public at its headquarters off Sukhumvit Road, Bangkok. The program consists of the Buddhist Forum, Meditation instruction and practice, and (on selected Sundays only) a Dharma talk by an invited guest speaker. The Buddhist Forum is an open discussion group featuring a brief presentation on a selected topic of spiritual interest. All attendees are invited to participate in a free exchange of ideas and questions. The second part of the program focuses on Buddhist mediation. This session is led by a meditation master; usually a Theravada Buddhist monk from the international temple of Wat Pah Nanachat.

Could anyone recommend several forest Wats I could visit while in Thailand? I intend to ordain but would like to check out different Wats. Its also important to find a competent and skillful teacher able to guide one in the practice. Thanks.

Rombodhidharma International Temple is located in a small district called Nong Hin, in the northeastern Thai province of Loei. The master at the temple is the Venerable Luang Por Phosri-Suriya Khemarato who gives dharma reflections on the original truth of all nature: non-attachment as it is.

Here is the link to the Temple website: http://rombodhidharma.org/

Buddhanet Thailand Directory

Places are also listed at DhammaWeb.org:

Dhamma Study Group

Around since the 1970s, probably the oldest dhamma discussion group in Bangkok. The group meets every Saturday between 2 and 4pm in Thonburi, and is attended by foreigners as well as Thais. They don't practice formal meditation and the main focus of the discussions is the Abhidhamma Pitaka.
