DENVER, COLORADO (BNO NEWS) -- At lest 20 people were injured on Monday after a 40-car pileup on Interstate 25 near Denver, Colorado, local officials said.

Authorities confirmed that about 8:45 a.m. local time, about 40 vehicles got involved in a pileup that took place on northbound Interstate 25 near Larkspur, 43 miles (69 kilometers) south of Denver.

Law enforcement agents and rescue teams were immediately deployed to the area and at least 20 people were transported to local hospitals to receive further treatment. The condition of the injured individuals was not disclosed.

An accident reportedly triggered the massive multi-car pileup due to the snowy and slushy conditions. The incident involved five semi-trucks and at least two cars required extrications.

Colorado State Patrol reported that the rescue efforts are affecting northbound traffic but the southbound lanes remain open.
