MOGADISHU, SOMALIA (BNO NEWS) -- At least 17 people were killed and more than 40 were injured on Wednesday during fighting between Islamist insurgents and African Union (AU) peacekeepers in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, officials and witnesses said.

Following heavy shelling and a gunfight, 17 bodies were recovered and 45 people were admitted to hospitals with injuries, said Ali Muse Sheikh, from the Mogadishu's ambulance service.

According to witnesses, members from the al-Shabaab group earlier attacked an UA peacekeeping base.

More than 20,000 people have died since the insurgency, who is trying to oust the local government protected by the AU, arose in early 2007.
