Hand Held Gps (Garmin?) For Use In Thailand

Featured Replies

I've a Garmin GPS for my car, and looking at getting a separate Garmin handheld model as I plan to do hiking, trekking in Thailand. Anyone with experience doing this in thailand and can share any recommendation for Garmin models? Which maps work best for hiking, trekking etc..

As I plan to get this before coming to Thailand, please let know if there're any compatibility issues with non-Thai Garmin models .... (I am aware from other threads that ESRI TSM junction view/lane assist does not work with models bought outside of Thailand).

Contact Chiang Mai Hiking HERE, they get out and about by foot and have info on terrain maps, GPS units etc. Also see HERE for ThaiVisa Forum member who seems to be in the know.

I have a Garmin G60CSx handheld, and it works brilliantly. I have traveled all over Isaan with it. The map is quite good, and I was amazed at the number of dirt roads it recognized, and how quickly it could recalculate a route.

Currently it's mounted on my motorcycle (in Bangkok), and is quite visible in daylight. It is quite rugged, and waterproof. Recommended.

Hi,

The 2 links InterestedObserver posted would both lead you to me eventually.

We just bought some Garmin Oregon 450 machines for the hiking group and they seem great so far. We are able to load both the Thai Street Map and our 'custom maps' made from scanned and then calibrated military maps onto the device.

Come up to Chiang Mai and come out hiking with us if you have the time. We would be happy to share our knowledge with you.

Also see our web site where you can find some helpful info.

Are you using Garmin SEA map or TSM?

I'm relocating to CM early next year, been to your website and will definitely be joining you for the hikes :D Will also want to learn from you all the cool stuff that you did with manipulating the maps B)

BTW, I bought the Garmin etrex Vista HCX + City Navigator SEA map (on MicroSD). No custom map facility for etrex models though. Anyway, lets compare with the Oregon once I'm there ;)

We are experimenting with gpx2img in order to make a 'map' that can be displayed on all kinds of Garmin devices of the trails and way points around CM. Keep an eye on our web site for more info. The advantage of a map of this sort rather than gpx tracks is that it can be turned on and off all at once and there is no limit to the amount of trails you can display at once.

Look forward to having you join us in CM!

Had a simple preliminary question about a Garmin that I thought worth tagging on here instead of making a new topic.

I was given a free Garmin 205W when I bought a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. The think is still in its box, and the writing on the box is thai. Will I be able to convert the thing to work in english? If not I'll just give to a thai friend without opening the bx.

There should be a CD in the box. On the CD you should find an English language map file that can be installed to replace the default Thai map.

Thank you for the suggestion. I am encouraged that in principle it can be converted to english. But no, I don't see a cd in the box - and anyway how would a cd of normal size slide into the garmin - no such slot for it. You will have gathered that I am a novice with GPS.

Is there a Garmin shop, in Chiangmai ideally, or in Bkk where I can pop in for help?
