Two Mexico suspects arrested in killing of US Consular official

CIUDAD JUAREZ, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- Mexican authorities on Friday announced that they arrested two individuals linked to "La Linea" criminal organization and suspects on the killing of a U.S. consulate official in March.

Federal law enforcement agents arrested Jose Guadalupe Díaz, 32, also known as "El Zorro," and his brother Reynaldo Díaz, 27, aka "El Rey," during an operation in Ciudad Juarez.

The Díaz brothers were arrested on murder, extortion and drug trafficking offenses. The brothers were members of a criminal cell known to be part of "Los Aztecas," an organization at the service of "La Linea" criminal group. Guadalupe Díaz is allegedly the leader of such cell.

The arrest of the brothers was possible after an investigation launched following the murder of a federal law agent that took place on August 24. The crime was perpetrated in the vicinity of the Ciudad Juarez University.

Guadalupe Díaz was in charge of managing the distribution and sale of narcotics, as well as extorting officers of local police forces in Delicias, Aldama and Chihuahua. Reynaldo Díaz was a hitman within the organization, provided security for his brother and monitored the movement of law enforcement.

The Díaz brothers are also the suspected perpetrators of the murder of the U.S. Consulate official Lesley Ann Enríquez Catton, 35, and her husband Arthur Haycock, 34. The pair was shot dead outside the U.S. facility after being chased. The couple's seven-year-old daughter survived the attack.

The husband of a Mexican employee of the consulate, Jorge Alberto Salcido, 37, was also killed by the Díaz brothers. The three murders outside the U.S. Consulate took place on March 13.

During the operation that resulted in the arrest of the Díaz brothers, law enforcement agents seized an AR-15 rifle, two shotguns, a handgun, a rifle, a grenade, 1,749 ammunition cartridges, 1.5 kilograms of marijuana, five anti-bullet vests, and a truck.

Last April, Mexican soldiers arrested five gang members suspected of participating in the U.S. Consulate killings. The suspects arrested were also members of the "Los Aztecas" gang.
