Cop Given Death Peanlty for Killing Solider

The Criminal Court hands down a death penalty to a police officer for the premeditated killing of a military officer during his 2008 raid on a pirated compact disc stall in Bangkok.

The convict Police Sergeant Prasart Janthima is an officer of the Prachachuen police station.

The murder took place after Prasart got into an argument with military inspector Lance Corporal Wuthichai Prasomsri while Prasart and Police Sergeant Major First Class Parawis Jongpitakpong were raiding a pirated CD stall outside the living quarters of the Supreme Command staff on Prachachuen Road.

Prasart shot and killed Wuthichai after Wuthichai questioned whether he is a real police officer while his partner Parawis forced the soldier's companion to lie down and handcuffed him.

The Criminal Court dismissed Prasart's excuse that his action was within the scope of his duty and was for self defense.

The court cited Prasart planned the murder by allowing Wuthichai to leave the CD stall before stalking and shooting him while the latter was on a motorcycle.

Furthermore, an eyewitness testified the victim showed no signs of harming the defendant.

Meanwhile, the charge against Parawis was dismissed as the court discovered he knew nothing about the murder plot.

The charge was filed by Wuthichai's wife Lance Corporal Nokkaew Prasomsri and public prosecutors of Criminal Litigation Office.

The victim's family said they are happy with the court's ruling and will file another charge against the National Police Office as the commanding unit of the convict and lodge a civil lawsuit seeking commpensation.

Police Hunt for More Fetus Dumping Suspects

The police are still trying to track down those possibly involved in illicit abortions, which led to the uncovering of more than 2,000 fetus corpses at a temple in Bangkok.

Meanwhile, preparations are underway for a planned merit making at the temple this weekend.

Wat Phraya Krai Police Superintendent, Colonel Methee Rakphan said that the investigation to find more suspects in the abortion case, which came about from the discovery of thousands of dead fetuses, still continues.

Earlier, the police have identified Wat Phai Ngern undertakers Suchart Phoome and Suthep Chabangbon, as well as Lanchakorn Janthamanas, a former nurse's assistant, as suspects.

Probe is being carried out to find if Sombat Sinothok, the step-mother of Lanchakorn, is involved in the crime.

Colonel Methee said that Sombat has denied all charges and investigators had found no evidence to prove that she used to work as a clinical assistant to perform abortions as alleged by one of the undertakers.

In related news, Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said that out of 25 health and beauty clinics in Bangkok and nearby provinces, officials have found only one to be involved with illegal abortion.

Meanwhile, Bang Kholaem officials have been clearing all morgues at Wat Phai Ngern, where the fetuses were found, to prepare for a merit making ceremony for all the dead babies on Saturday.

Minister to the Prime Minister's Office, Ongart Klampaiboon said he would seek advice from people with the knowledge on what to do with the fetuses, as Thai tradition forbids cremation of young babies.
