PM to hold official press conference once a week

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra plans to hold official press conference once a week to provide journalists with accurately detailed issues beneficial to the public.

The prime minister said here this morning that he had planned to hold the weekly press conference on Thursdays.

Government Spokesman Surapong Suebwonglee told journalists here yesterday that the prime minister had accepted the idea proposed by the journalists that he hold the official press conference once a week.

"The prime minister's weekly press conference is likely to last 45-60 minutes each, with the first one expected to be organized within two weeks", he disclosed.

"During the official press conferences, the prime minister will answer questions raised by the journalists and provide them with accurate details of issues concerning the government's policies, plans and strategies beneficial to the public and the nation", he noted.

The prime minister would, however, continue to give daily interviews with the journalists briefly, he added.

The move followed a recent misinformation provided by the local media about cracks in runway of Bangkok's new international airport, or the Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Mr. Thaksin blamed the media for publishing what he considered a 'distorted story' about the Suvarnabhumi Airport's runway, which could damage the country's reputation and creditability.

He cited a news report in an English-language newspaper saying that the cracked runway might cause accidents for planes when they land on the runway, and that a US engineer had quietly checked the cracks.

"Such the erroneous news report seriously damages the country's reputation and creditability, and could cause some travellers to avoid visiting Thailand", he cautioned.

"The media naturally race against time to present news to the public, and at times they may forget to double check information for accuracy", he said.

Experts, including Deputy Transport Minister Gen. Chainant Charoensiri, who is a military engineer, have confirmed that the cracks at the new Suvarnabhumi Airport are not on runway surfaces, but on the slope and do not compromise airport safety standards.

Dr. Surapong said that he would also restructure the work of the government spokespersons' team, as suggested by the prime minister, to coordinate directly and closely with every minister and agency concerned, as well as chief editors of all media organizations and newspapers for accurate and timely information exchanges.

The government spokespersons' team would also clearly divide areas of work for their coordination and reports to the public, the newly-appointed government disclosed.
