Hello my fellow forum ladies & gentlmen,

I am very shortly comming back to Phuket but this time to work,can someone please explain to me how the visa run system works?and why does a farong have to leave Thailand every three months anyway?i am very new to the whole thing,i am currently a British National & will be applying for a non immigrant multiple entry cat b visa for 12 months.

Moving to visa forum.

A visa allow you to travel to the country. The permission to stay you obtain on entry allows you to stay in the country. A work permit allows you to work whilst your permission to stay is valid.

Under the Immigration Act, Non-B visa (issued by Thai embassy/consulate abroad) will provide 90 day permission to stay on each entry. If you meet the requirements for extension of stay based on employment (issued by Thai Immigration) you will receive 12 months permission to stay, but will have have to report your address to immigration every 90 days. For most immigration offices that can be done by post.

You should talk to your employer as there are company requirements/documents for them to meet/provide in going the extension of stay route. You would need single entry Non-B visa to start the process (and to obtain visa would require supporting papers from your employer including Form WP3 receipt from local labour office confirming work permit has been applied for).

Be aware that if you obtain extension of stay based on employment and employment terminates for whatever reason, you will have to leave the country on last day of working or obtain 7 day extension (fee 1,900 baht) from immigration. This does not apply if your permission to stay is based on Non-B visa entry and are doing 90 day border runs; you can remain in the country until your permission to stay expires and then do border runs for a new 90 day entries for as long as your visa remains valid.
