MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) -- Mexican authorities are searching for three suspects in the shooting death of Silverio Cavazos, the former governor of Colima state, officials said on Monday.

Colima state prosecutor Arturo Diaz Rivera told local radio that a preliminary investigation has ruled out that Cavazos had links to drug cartels or drug trafficking.

The former governor was outside his house in Colima City on Sunday when gunmen stormed his residence at around 10.40 a.m. local time and shot him. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Cavazos, 41, was elected to finish the 2003 - 2009 constitutional period of governor Gustavo Vazquez Montes, who died in a plane crash in February 2005.

Mexico has seen a recent spate of killings of politicians.

At least 14 mayors were killed in the last two years, including Rodolfo Torre Cantu, the leading candidate for governor in the border state of Tamaulipas, who was killed while riding in his motorcade on his way to a campaign event.
