TRUE Corporation to Improve Internet, 3G Services

TRUE Corporation is preparing to invest 12 billion baht to improve its internet broadband services and expand 3G services on the existing 2G frequency using HSPA technology.

TRUE is also planning 30 billion baht 3G investment when the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission is finally established.

TRUE Corporation Chief Executive Supachai Chearavanont stated that TRUE is prepared to invest 12 billion baht from its 2011 budget on its broadband internet services and expansion of its commercial 3G services on the existing 2G 850 Megahertz frequency using the HSPA technology.

The investment is currently being studied to make sure it is in accordance with the the Act of Private Participation in State Undertakings.

TRUE has extended its lease contract to use CAT Telecom's 2G frequency for another five years, expiring in 2018.

When there is a clear framework for the Frequency Allocation Bill by the mid 2011, TRUE is prepared to invest 30 billion baht in the next two to three years to acquire a 3G license on the 2.1 Gigahertz frequency.

TRUE said buying Hutchinson Wireless Multimedia, which is being negotiated, is part of the 30 billion-baht investment plan.

TRUE Corporation expects the company's total revenue will grow by five to six percent next year.

Supachai is confident that next year's mobile services and broadband internet revenue will improve as TRUE is projecting 3.2 million broadband clients from the current 2.2 million.

He added that TRUE's cable television operation will expand by 20 percent due to the growing advertisement space and recovering economy.

TRUE has also been giving back to the society with a relief campaign by sending more than 10,000 blankets to villagers suffering from the cold spell in the north and northeastern regions.

I would prefer the 12 billion baht is invested in upgrading its cable TV offerings

It does ok in the broadband space but <deleted> True Visions has neither quality or content.........how about catching up with the rest of the region in your HDTV offerings...1080p across at least a dozen channels and show us some sporting content that isnt football!!

True is currently delivering approx 5 Mbps international download speeds in the Laguna/Cherng Talay area of Phuket, using wireless HSPA (so-called "3G") technology.

If this announcement means that True will extend 5 Mbps international speeds to all of Phuket, for the current B 800 per month, using HSPA, I say it's a tremendous development.

There are technical advantages to using the 850 MHz spectrum. If True can make it work politically, they may well corner the market on HSPA ("3G") until the gov't can get its act together and auction off the 2.1 GHz spectrum.

And buying Hutch out from under CAT is nothing short of brilliant. That gives True CDMA towers throughout Bangkok and 21 surrounding provinces. The big question is whether CAT is going to aggressively block them, somehow.

My hat's off to True. IF it works, this will be a game-dominating move.
