At least 24 dead in Yemen car bomb attack against Shiites

2010-11-24 23:09:46 GMT+7 (ICT)

SANA'A, YEMEN (BNO NEWS) -- At least 24 Shiite Muslims were killed and several others were wounded when a suicide car bomber attacked a convoy during a religious procession in the northern region of Yemen, officials said Wednesday.

Thousands of Houthis, who have been in constant struggle with the government, were traveling to the Al Ghadeer festival in the province of Al Jawf - located around 175 kilometers (109 miles) northeast of the Yemen's capital Sanaa - when the attack was carried out.

Among the killed were provincial tribal chief Hussein bin Ahmed bin Hadhban and his son.

The Houthis are members of the Zaidi sect of Shiite Islam and follow the teachings of Bader Al-Deen Al-Houthi and his son, Hussein, the first leader of uprising who was killed in 2004.

The group has not accused anyone of being responsible of the attack, but it comes as tensions have remained high between the group and the local government of Yemen's north. In February, a ceasefire was issued between the Houthis and the government.
