Finally ...

It's bad enough I'm forced to shake your hand every time I pass by your shop,

worse again when your standing in the middle of a Soi and intercept me the whole width of the street,

Hey, if I want a suit your sign in the window says it all,   :o

Aint that the truth !!!!!!!!!1 :D

I am curious about this crackdown.  Just what crime are the tailors guilty of?  If they are illegal, then they should be deported, if not, then what can they do to them?  This smacks of racism all-right.  (I also don't like touts in general and pushy ones in particular, but laws need to be followed).

As far as I can tell, apart from any immigrations violation, the only thing these guys are guilty of is being obnoxious. Unless such behaviour runs counter to some obscure military junta emergency decree from the 70's that's being dusted off just for this occasion, bring obnoxious is not a crime. This story smacks of yet more political grandstanding on somebody's part.

Not as annoying as the "Sexy Movie, sexy movie..." matra that's uttered everywhere you walk in Phantip Plaza, and even when outside the building walking towards it.

Why do they assume that all farrang are porn-obsessed perverts? I feel quite insulted sometimes...

LOL!

Try walking on Silom. I'm thinking of printing 1000's of T shirts saying "NO, I DON'T want sexy movies thank you!" Erm, but then I'd have to hire a bunch of guys to sell 'em on the streets of course.... ddohhh!! :o:D

Yeah, there's a difference between having a culture that's open about sex and being bullied into it! Farrang equals money and that makes us all fair game, but it is tiring anywhere you go.

:D My teeshirt would say "I STAR in all sexy movies, I NEVER wear suits, f*** o**"

While we're complaining about obnoxious ineffective sales tactics...I got to get my complaint in...

When I go into the shop and the salesman/woman tells me (in Thai) If there's anything you need, ask...and just stands there staring...I feel like the 7 year old boy in the candy store.

I can't concentrate as the sales is just standing their staring, so I finally do ask

"Is this...?"

a quick response "...No" or "I don't know"

"Do you have...?"

"No, this is what we have."

"Do you know where...?"

"No, they don't sell it anymore."

"Do you even know what I'm asking about? What don't they sell?"

"I know they don't have it...This is what there is."

The lack of knowledge of their products and/or the laziness, unwillingness, and lack of ability to advise or assist, not to mention the uncomfortable feeling with a salesperson waiting...as if I'm obligated to buy for them waiting on me.

I used to love when I would know more about the product then them...but that certainly is an arrogant approach which could potentially lose face...so now

Reverse psychology usually just has me leaving the shop with a frown scratching my head instead of arguing with them when they certainly don't have a clue.

Phuket:

Karon to crack down on tailors

KARON, PHUKET: -- Community leaders in Kata-Karon have issued a warning to the 144 tailor shops in the area that they will crack down on any that continue to use aggressive touting techniques or take advantage of tourists.

More abuse of foreigners.

The sleazy Thai touts are much more of an annoyance.

These guys are a PITA! Last night while trying to walk home on Bangla rd I had to ask this one tailor tout to remove his arm from my person three times. Though these poor guys are are just trying to eek out a living. The ones that should be deported are the ones driving around the island like enraged maniacs. On the soi where the Islander restaurant is ever notice what pigs the the owners of the indian restaurant at the end are? Deport them. Their restaurant sucks their food is mediocre and they charge 180 baht for a glass of crappy wine.

I would love to take an axe to one of their fancy shiny new cars! :o

They are real POS IMHO!

I never knew how many friends i might have in Thailand until walking around patong beach....  :D

Yes all those nice Indian tailors, Hi mate you need a suit, or g'day mate we have very nice shirts.

Well they are defenitly not my "mates" perhaps I look like an Aussie but I'm from Denmark.

I have by now learned how to simply just walk past and ignore them, it works for me who spends a couple of month in Patong each year, perhaps they remember me as an ######. :o

What is the legal reasoning behind allowing Indians to work these jobs? I thought it was near impossible to get a work permit to do a job that there are plenty of able-bodied Thais to do?

90% of these Indians are Thai nationals.... born in Thailand and holding Thai citizenship. Any guess is needless

Thats almost the same as the number of bars in Patong isnt it?

I for one have never seen anything worth buying in those tailor shops, its all so out of fashion and tacky.

Whether it's been said on this thread before but, have any of you survived the tailors in India itself?

If you have, I reckon that you'll realise how low key they are in Thailand.

If you've been through the baptism of fire on the cub-continent, then here pales into insignificance.

Still a pain though.
