URUMQI, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- A stampede at a school in northwestern China on Monday injured dozens of children, some seriously, according to state-run media.

The incident happened at Aksu City No. 5 Primary School in the country's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, according to the state-run Xinhua news agency.

Xinhua, citing witnesses and officials, said the stampede began as some one-hundred students were rushing down the stairs at the end of class. The school has more than 1,800 students in total.

At least 41 children were transported to Aksu City's No. 1 People's Hospital following the incident, where seven children remain in a serious condition.

Earlier this month, on November 22, at least 347 people were killed in a stampede during Khmer Water Festival celebrations in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh. Nearly 800 others were injured.
