Morning all, I have had an email from a friend in the UK who has asked me if I know about forms, costs etc for a Thai visiting the UK. I don't so I thought I would ask here, hopefully one of the wise old owls will be able to help.

I have pasted his email below which has the info that he is after.

Thanks in advance

'Anyway, wonder if you can help me with a random query. Someone I know has married a Thai lady, and has subsequently had a baby daughter with her. He is sorting her a visa to come to the UK, but his wife has told him he needs to go to the Thai Embassy in London to complete a form to allow the baby to come to the UK. Seems odd, as he has already forked out £160 for a passport for the nipper, and he cannot see this advice anywhere on the various immigration websites. Also, he has sent his wife £600 for her visa, which allegedly she has applied for, however she has now told him that she did not have to pay up front and she has used some of the money for something else. Alarm bells have started ringing, so I just wondered if you knew, or could find out quickly, exactly what the score is.

So to summarise:

  • Does he really have to go to the embassy to complete this form for his baby?
  • Do you have to pay up front for a Thai Visa (2 year) when you apply.'

You might want to get your friend to join Thai Visa and ask the questions first hand, there is always a danger of things being lost in translation.

Things don't quite add up, but that could be nothing more than his wife being confused, though I might be too generous.

I'm not an expert in these matters but if your friend is the child's father then the child can get a UK Passport which costs £81.50 (4075 Baht). The UK national needs to be on the Thai birth certificate, some people register the birth at the embassy but there is no requirement to do so for the child to get a UK Passport, the Thai birth certificate is acceptable. It may well be that as your friend is in the UK the Thai authorities need confirmation that he is the father, hence the visit to The Royal Thai Embassy, but I'm only guessing.

You and your friend are wise in being concerned about the visa fee, the fee has to be paid with the visa application. You talk about a two year visa, do you mean a two year visit visa or a settlement visa, a two year visit visa would cost £245 (12,250 Baht) and a settlement visa £750 (37,500 Baht) plus the cost of an English Test and TB Certificate.

You will read from these forum that either visa will require a fair bit of gathering of evidence for submission to the UKBA.

Whilst I'm not suggesting their is anything untoward, it doesn't quite ring true to me.

yeah your mate's mate is getting scammed big time.

The child is both British and Thai, and should apply for both passports in Thailand. The Thai passport is the equivalent of about 20 pounds. The Thai passport is used to exit and re-enter Thailand, the UK one used for entry and exit from the UK.

As for British visa's for the wife, and the cost of the visa, 'theoldgit' has outlined the cost.
