NUWARA ELIYA, SRI LANKA (BNO NEWS) -- Sixteen people were injured on Wednesday afternoon when a suicide bomber attacked a police station in central Sri Lanka, local media reported.

The blast happened at the main police station in Nuwara Eliya where a man detonated a grenade while being processed. Earlier, the man was taken into custody on a bus traveling from Katharagama to Katagamuwa after he was found to be carrying marijuana.

Sixteen police officers were injured when the grenade detonated, while the attacker was killed. Several of the injured are in a critical condition and are undergoing surgery.

In September, twenty-five people were killed and dozens more were injured when three containers carrying explosives exploded near a police station in eastern Sri Lanka. Two Chinese were among those killed in what the government called an accidental detonation.
