Greek police clash with protestors in 2nd anniversary of teen killing

ATHENS, GREECE (BNO NEW) — Protests turned violent as Greek police and thousands of youths that gathered to remember a 16-year-old who was killed by police in 2008 clashed, officials said Monday.

Greek riot police began firing tear gas as several youths were throwing rocks at the police, banks and shops in central Athens. They were also smashing phone booths as several began attacking the country's Ministry of Finance building.

Reports indicate that at least 2,000 people gathered and marched to the Greek parliament, but despite the clashes, no reports of injured or arrested were issued.

When police shot Alexandros Grigoropoulos to death on December 6, 2008, the country saw its worst rioting in over 20 years as youths around the country slashed through several cities, its buildings, and businesses for two weeks.

Even though the two police officers claimed Grigoropoulos was killed when a warning shot richeted, a Greek court in October found a 38-year-old police officer guilty and sentenced him to life in prison, while another officer, 32, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for complicity.
