Keiko Fujimori to run for office in Peru

LIMA, PERU (BNO NEWS) -- Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of imprisoned former president Alberto Fujimori, on Tuesday officially launched her run for Peru's presidency in an event in the outskirts of Lima.

According to Andina news agency, Fujimori presented Rafael Rey and Jaime Yoshiyama as part of her presidential campaign team. Rey and Yoshiyama will be the candidates for first and second vice president respectively.

"There are good candidates but there are some less good. The option represented by Keiko is the best for the country," said Rey. "The option of Keiko is the best."

Polls conducted throughout Peru indicate that Keiko Fujimori is the second-preferred candidate for the April presidential elections behind former president Alejandro Toledo. In some areas she is also surpassed by the former Lima mayor Luis Castañeda.

Yoshiyama was Peru's Vice President from 1993 to 1995, during the mandate of Keiko's father, Alberto. He remarked that he will work for enriching the poor and most vulnerable citizens of the South American country.

Rey, a former Peruvian minister, also remarked that he believes in the human quality and charisma of Keiko, the daughter of the former president Fujimori who was imprisoned for human rights violations and embezzlement charges.

Alberto Fujimori was a controversial leader as his methods often infringed human rights and his mandate was cataloged as authoritarianism. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison in April 2009 and later sentenced to an additional 7 years and a half in July of the same year.
