Featured Replies

If I stay outside of canada for over 6 months will I lose my heath care coverage? Will I have problems returning? Any advice is appreciated.

Cheers!

In theory, yes, your coverage is lost and you must then reside back in Canada for a further six months before it is reinstated.

There are workarounds, but perhaps a bit shady, so I won't go into detail here on the forum. You want further suggestions, PM me.

That is something to check into BEFORE you leave your home country. I'm Canadian, but I only stay in Thailand for 5 months a year. I'm not sure if the Canadian consulate would be up to date on all the regulations.

Each province has different rules and regulations concerning absence from Canada. Google your province's plan, and then read where it says extended stays and absence from Canada. It should be spelled out simply in both English and/or French.

Sorry if it's a stupid question, but how can they know you were out of the country for more than 6 months if you don't tell them???

With computers tracking who is coming and going at immigration I would think if they really wanted to find out the information would be available between government agencies. If you have a dual passport that may throw them off also, by leaving on a USA or UK passport.

My province allows you leaves of up to 2 years with their permission (once every 5 years) to keep your medical services plan. It is not well known or promoted but it can be done.

they check passport stamps and if you were paying premiums back home.

if you kept paying premiums and got home , say after a year, no health problems, think yd be clear, BUT asking coverage for an injury while OS, they will want yr passport.

you can stay for over 6 months if you let them know ahead of time, max 2 years out 5.

Search TV for medical plans you can buy in Thailand, tons of Posts.

Canada could save millions and millions by farming medical to 3rd world countries like Thailand and get rid of as many old farts who want spend their llast years on a Beach
