French police arrest teenager to end hostage drama at nursery school

PARIS (BNO NEWS) -- French police on Monday arrested an armed teenager who had taken 20 children and a teacher hostage at a nursery school in Besançon, eastern France, local media reported.

The 17-year-old teenager, who is said to be mentally unstable, burst into the Charles Fourier school at around 8.30 a.m. local time. While armed with two swords, he took 20 children and a female teacher as hostages.

Most of the children were released later when the teenager told a teacher's assistant to leave with some of the children and ordered her to then return. When she returned she was allowed to leave with more infants, leaving the teacher and five infants between the ages of four and six as hostages.

Firefighters and ambulance crews were rushed to the scene as a crowd of around 80 people gathered in front of the school. Concerned parents were also waiting outside for their children to return safely.

After several hours, police negotiators were able to convince the hostage taker to surrender. He then released all remaining hostages, who were unharmed.

Police said the suspect lives in the area of the school and has a history of depression and psychological problems. He said he wanted to do "something" but never specified what. During the negotiations, the teen requested a gun in order to kill himself, but he was not given one.

The last notable school hostage taking in France occurred in 1993 in the Paris suburb of Neuilly, where President Nicolas Sarkozy was then mayor.

"The President of the Republic welcomes the successful outcome of the hostage taking this morning at a kindergarten in Besançon," the presidential palace said in a brief statement. "He extends his sincere congratulations to the authorities of the State who were involved in the operation with composure, professionalism, and termination."

Sarkozy also expressed his thanks to the employees at the kindergarten, especially the teacher who was taken hostage along with the children.
