Salary Requirements At A Well Known University Outside Of Bangkok

Personally, if I were recruiting staff I wouldn't pay any more for a PhD either, in fact I would give preference to not employing one. Are you applying for a regular teaching job or is there some research involved?

That's interesting, why is that?

Although this university has a graduate program so, of course, a phd would be required and yes, they expect one to do research.

ps Are MS holders able to teach all BS courses in Thailand? I would think it'd be like in the US where they tend to teach only 1st and 2nd year courses.

I can't answer your question about MSc holders as I don't have sufficient experience of teaching in Thai universities. I might have explored the options further but I soon realized that university pay scales are generally quite low.

I can see the point to employing a PhD where research is involved. However, I can't see any advantage in employing a PhD to teach BSc students basic text book stuff as I can see how the PhD might become dissatisfied with such work and leave the job. The chances are a "less qualified" lecturer could do the work equally well and therefore be a more content and reliable employee for the university.

The only PhD I have worked with in Thailand was a complete arsehol_e, an alcoholic, and lasted about 2 days before being sacked. He was employed BECAUSE he was a PhD whilst it was blatantly obvious to all western staff he was a complete failure. Thankfully, even the Thai administration had to accept reality after two days.

From my understand, Thailand is trying to fill all their university teaching positions, BA and MA, with PhD instructors. I don't think it is talked about alot because no one has figured out how to implement this policy. It would just cause panic within the system.

My sources tell me this was approved by the senate 3 years ago and there is a deadline when universities are to be in compliance with their law or lose their Ministry of Education certification.

Fair enough, BUT, at 100K/month, that $36K US, probably about 60% of what they might get in the US ($60K/year?). While at 60K/month, that $24K US, about 25% of what a computer science professor would get in the US.

You are making direct salary comparisons between countries that have different costs of living.

Not really a good indicator.

I'm comparing the salaries of professors and high school teachers actually. HST get about 60% of the salary they get in the US and professors get about 25% in Thailand. The point is that international schools probably pay about the same as the US adjusted by cost of living (including the ability to save the same amount of money), whereas universities pay way less.

BTW, 24K/year in thailand is no where near the same as 100K/year in the US. The latter allows a standard of living and saving that is impossible on 60K baht/month in Thailand. It may be that 6K/year in thailand and 24K/year in the US are comparable. but not 25k and 100K.

I don't know your tax bracket, but $24k in Thailand may actually get you more than $100k in the US (Silicon Valley in particular). Over there, they suck living life out of you (federal, medicare, SSI, state, local, property, sales and other taxes). After taxes, factor in just the cost of food and lodging and I doubt you can save much from $100k in Silicon Valley.

I am guessing I have a similar background and experience as you do, but I have no hopes of finding an interesting hi-tech job in Thailand. No matter what the government wants and what it hopes universities here turn into, I doubt Thailand will ever be able to join the hi-tech countries. It is doing just fine with tourism, services and low-tech manufacturing. If it ain't broke, why fix it.

just my 2 cents biggrin.gif

If you are talking about a school located South of Petchaburi i was there six years ago. In country hires made 90 000 bt per month, overseas made that plus l5 000 for housing. The Philipino HR person was making 32 000 bt at that time. Hope this helps.
