Hello,

My name is Harry and I have recently been given the job to organise the 1st. Year Anniversary Concert on Patong Beach in Phuket.

The Concert has two themes. The first being to Commemorate and honour those who have passed on as a result of the Tsunami and the second to invite people back to Phuket and the surrounding islands.

Basically we want to let people overseas know that the best way to help the people recover from this tragedy is to have overseas visitors come back to the Island.

As you can appreciate, I have an enormous task ahead of me and will appreciate all feedback and input to help make this a success for all who live here.

Cheers,

Harry K.

with all due respect to those who died and to those who lost their loved ones and livelihoods last year , does anybody seriously believe that a concert on the beach at patong will make headline news around the world and result in a mad rush of tourists to phuket ?

perhaps you should direct your energies at pressurising the authorities to release some more of the aid money in order to directly benefit those who are still homeless / businessless / motherless and fatherless before embarking on a concert that at best will put a few hundred local residents onto the beach.

tourists will return in due course , but if the authorities in patong and other resorts in phuket are serious about pulling in the tourists , then they should look at improving the facilities offered outside of the hotels , namely transportation rip offs and hassles , dual pricing and ugly surroundings and the vested interests of those who only seek to preserve their own income at the expense of thoughtful and beneficial progress that would turn patong and other resorts into world class resorts instead of the shabby generally sleazy places that appear to be run for the benefit of the few rather than for the enjoyment of the many.

or you could employ the services of bob geldoff , he generally get bums on seats.

Some more details of the concert may attract some more postive thoughts.

Phuket DOES need more positive international attention and perhaps a well run, world-class concert may prove to add a more international flavour to the island, assist in the healing process and counteract some of total media misinformation fed to the world about the post-tsunami state of the island.

Comments posted above are extremely valid and the authorities urgently need to address these problems.

With respect Khall,

I think this is a very positive post.

Put the effort into where it is needed for a change.

( taxexile, I know you where joking but don't give Boab's marketing men any ideas, last thing Phuket needs is Boaby Geldof ).

Chechoie, I totally agree that all these issues need to be addressed (see above) but maybe Phuket could do with Bob Geldof.... imagine the bums on seats and hotel bookings and beach lounger hire and massages and restaurant meals and tours and ........ :o

Yeh right, Khall, good idea,

Imagine if you will, Boab’s, entourage flies in a couple of days before the great man himself.

Finds the worst possible place in Phuket for Boab to do his intro for the camera.

Finds some poor little orphan girl and some poor Thai family for Boab’s close ups.

Digs up some facts about the Thai government’s ineptitudes in dealing with the aftermath of the Big Wave, for Boab to rhyme off for the camera,

Makes up some downright lies for Boab to rhyme off in from off the camera, (got to keep it real man).

Boab flies in, does his bit for the camara and repeats it for his bit on stage at the big Tsunami concert on the beach.

Boab flies out.

So what did Phuket get from the big concert and Boab’s flyng visit?

Well Phuket never got any money from the concert, the boy’s from the Big Mango would see to that.

Got some hotel bookings for a few days.

The masseur girls made a few extra dollars and the sun lounger dudes too.

But the big prize is the publicity from Boab’s mini documentary that he’ll sell to all and sundry all over the world about how Phuket is still suffering from the TSUNMAI ! and the ordinary folks that where perhaps thinking of coming back will then cancel after seeing Boab’s doc.

No Khall, I say let Phuket recover on it’s on which it will and let’s do what little we can to make sure the people who suffered get as much help as they can, minus the bullshit.

nuff said.

Well the "people who suffered" seem to be getting little help... as far as I can see.

And the "people who suffered" are the ones who most need the help in bringing back the free-spending tourists who are not part of a package "we've scared off the ghosts... safe to come back now" type of mentality.

What are we arguing about here Chechoie?

It's all good .

Bob or No Bob! :o

We're not arguing Khall, we're exchanging views and debating stuff,

It may be a very good idea, IF it gets international publicity.

Unfortunately I suspect that the 1st anniversary will merely be an excuse for BBC and CNN to replay those tsunami images again, and again, and agin......
