Forking And Stabbing

Featured Replies

Long ago in my country I have read a newspaper article about "stupid names" of new companies. When registering some new business the owners pick two "nice" and inoffensive words and put them together without realizing that the new name has a bad meaning, sometimes even hilarious or vulgar. I saw this done in Thailand too, many times, with or without intention, like for example a hostel called "come together", but the last word written with different color for each syllable ("come to get her"). :D

However, today I have run into one that beats all the other. Trying to access my Thai bank account I got a banner for a web page they were advertising, called "9forking.com". No idea what the page is all about, as it is all Thai, it seems to be some auction for pictures with the king, or with some famous Thai people, as monks, old rulers, etc. All my respect to such people, but I wonder who was the idiot designing such a name.

In English, "to fork" someone means to put someone in forks, like you could see during the middle age, when the people who rises in arms against a government or local ruler were hanged on a "fork" (usually made from a tree with all leafs and small branches cut out). "Forking" also means to pierce, cut, raise, pitch, dig, split, or to divide something into branches, like for example a tree, a street, or a path, or a bunch of people (to force them to fight against each-other). In suburb where I come from, "forking and stabbing" is a synonym to "divide and conquer".

Excuse me for being low brow, but it conjured another connotation and image for me! Still not favourable.

9forking = when i read it i read press 9 for king i never read forking and also your description of the site indicates that that is what they want to convey. Dont know what the 9 stands for.

well, I know what they wanted to say, and also what 9 stands for (Thai luckiest number, plus the ninth king, etc, etc, being here for more then 10 years), but still, associating all that famous people from the Thai history and present with "forking" sounds like a bad joke for me, one of my Thai colleagues even joked that the person who designed the name was not "idiot", as I wrote, but a "genius" :D

Think its all in your mind most "normal" people will read 9 for king. So its still a good idea because the majority does not think like you.

Last night my wife and I were watching a movie on TV together on the sofa spoon style.

That soon led to forking.

rama nine? ninth king of the dynasty. someone no self respecting thai would mock. risky even on this site.

As any kind of speculation of HM the King is not allowed as per:

2) Not to express disrespect of the King of Thailand or anyone else in the Thai royal family, whether living or deceased, nor to criticize the monarchy as an institution. Speculation, comments and discussion of either a political or personal nature are not allowed when discussing HM The King or the Royal family. Discussion of the lese majeste law or lese majeste cases is permitted on the forum, providing no comment or speculation is made referencing the royal family. To breach this rule will result in immediate ban.

Therefore I think it is best to close this.
