Fire Annihilates Warehouse in Phitsanulok

A fire blazed through a warehouse in Phitsanulok province causing extensive damages in the amount of at least 10 million baht.

The fire reportedly started at a furniture warehouse in the Muang district of Phitsanulok province, and caused about 10 million baht in damages.

Firefighters said 10 water trucks were called in to extinguish the blaze that took place near a Tesco Lotus hypermarket.

They disclosed that it took approximately one hour to get the fire under control, saying it was particularly difficult because most of the items inside were extremely flammable.

The entire building was destroyed by the blaze.

Investigators said it is likely that an electricity related problem was the cause, as the building's power lines came from a nearby warehouse.

State of emergency lifted in Pattani's Mae Lan

By The Nation

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the lifting of two draconian provisions - martial law and state of emergency in Mae Lan district, Pattani in a pilot move to scale down the security in the southernmost provinces.

Following the end of emergency rule, the authorities will enforce the Internal Security Act to keep peace in the strife-torn area. The ISA is seen as having less stringent provisions to circumvent rights and liberties of the local residents.

The end of the state of emergency in Mae Lan will take immediate effect while the martial law will cease following the issuing of a Royal command upon recommendation of the Defence Council.

Four killed in troubled Thai south: police

NARATHIWAT, December 28, 2010 (AFP) - Four people, including a suspected militant, were killed in a series of incidents in Thailand's insurgency-plagued far south, police said Tuesday.

The alleged insurgent died in a clash with security forces early Tuesday in Pattani province that also left four police officers injured, officials said.

In the same province, a 37-year-old Buddhist was gunned down Monday while riding a motorcycle to work, while a 27-year-old Muslim ranger and his elderly father were shot dead at a rubber plantation in neighbouring Narathiwat.

More than 4,400 people have died since suspected Islamic insurgents began a violent campaign in Thailand's deep south near the border with Malaysia in January 2004, targeting both Muslims and Buddhists.

The Thai cabinet was on Tuesday expected to consider lifting a state of emergency in one district of Pattani as a test case for the three provinces where the strict laws have been in place since 2005.

By Wichit Chaitrong

The Nation

The Ministry of Finance upgrades this year's economic growth forecast to 7.8 per cent from the previous estimate of 7.5 per cent, said the Fiscal Policy Office director-general Naris Chaiyasoot.

Exports, consumption and investment contributed to higher growth this year, he said.

"It is a balanced growth as the key factors contributed to the expansion," he said at a press conference on the monthly economic report.

Thai economy was expected to expand at 4.5 per cent next year due to slower export growth, he said.
