MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) -- Mexican authorities on Tuesday seized over 80 kilograms of marijuana from a prison in the district of Xochimilco in Mexico City.

Prison security guards and law enforcement agents were executing a search operation at the male prison in southern Mexico City as part of the local government's efforts to fight drug trafficking inside prison facilities.

During the operation, law enforcement agents discovered and seized over 80 kilograms of marijuana as well as several small packages of cocaine. The narcotics were found inside the sixth and eight rooms.

The large amount of narcotics discovered included 17 packages totaling 83 kilograms of marijuana, 59 small plastic bags of the same drug, 745 paper packages of marijuana, 21 paper packages of powder cocaine, four bags with crack cocaine, three bags of a white powdery substance and two scales.

The narcotics were handed to the Xochimilco delegation which will analyze the substances to determine if they are indeed narcotics. In addition, an investigation was opened to prosecute those responsible of dealing the drugs.
