A Friend of ours, had an accident a month ago. he now has some brain damage, and short term memory loss, and needs to come back to the States.

The problem is that he lost his Passport and Visa. We can get him an emergency passport, but what about the Visa?

Can we just show up at the Airport and leave the country? Or do we have to go to Immigration downtown to straighten it out first.

he has an old passport with all the info in it, will this work? he has an retirement visa, which type i don't know.

I was hoping to get everything done in 2-3 days. He's up in Udon Tanni, and hopefully his gal will bring him down to meet us in BKK, in Jan.

Thanks for your help, Cali.

First is obtain police report of loss in location that happened. Then obtain new passport using that from Embassy in Bangkok. Then visit immigration to enter previous permission to stay information into new passport and then depart on new passport. If he has a retirement extension of stay from immigration that information can be retrieved and entered into the new passport but if on a multi entry visa the visa will be lost. If he has a permission to stay far in the future and expects to return he may want to obtain a re-entry permit before leaving to keep it alive. Cost would be 1,000 baht and photo but can only be obtained after new passport issued and information placed into it.

As this appears to be an emergency move with no plans for return expect you should have his friend help him file a police report now if not already done. With that Embassy should be able to issue emergency passport. If he has any photos of previous passport it would be helpful to have as immigration must confirm previous permitted to stay period and if on overstay there would be 500 baht per day (up to 20k) fine prior to exit. Normally all information is on computer but good to know last day/place of entry if old passport information is not available.

It is Royal Thai Police policy to allow someone to file a lost passport report in any Police Station location. This is because the Police consider a passport to be an essential identity document that needs to be reported lost ASAP, so the passport number can be cancelled quickly and not used for illicit purposes.

Sadly many provincial police stations are not aware of this!

Lumpini Police Station in Bangkok is close to many embassies and issues between 10 and 20 lost passport reports per day. If you wish to report the loss of property with monetary value for insurance purposes at the same time, Lumpini Police Station may not allow this. You will need to go the Tourist Police head office on Petchburi road to get a report for insurance purposes.

It normally takes about 1-2 hours to get your visa stamped over into a new passport at immigration.
