Oakland Raiders dump head coach Tom Cable

OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) -- The Oakland Raiders on Tuesday announced that they will not be extending head coach Tom Cable's contract, the team's website reported.

Cable, 46, of Merced, California, whose contract expired at the conclusion of the 2010 season, was informed a contract extension would not be offered. He joined the Raiders as offensive line coach in 2007, but in September 30, 2008, he was named interim head coach in the early stages of the 2008 season.

Despite finishing his time with Raiders with a regular season losing record of 17-27, he finished off this season with an 8-8 record, which marks the team's first non-losing season since 2002. Several players have expressed surprise through their Twitter accounts.

Cable began his NFL coaching career as the Atlanta Falcon's offensive line coach in 2006 before joining the Raiders.
