BERLIN, GERMANY (BNO NEWS) -- The German Agriculture Ministry on Wednesday revealed that up to 3,000 tons of an animal feed additive was found containing a poisonous dioxin that aids the development of cancer, Deutsche Welle television reported.

The study increases the crisis of contaminated eggs and poultry in several German states which was discovered last week. The poisonous chemical was allegedly introduced in animal feed contaminated with industrial fats.

On Tuesday, officials said that approximately 527 tons were contaminated, but this amount significantly increased after the Agriculture Ministry's report. Public health officials said that the concentration of dioxin does not represent risk to human health.

The dioxin is contained in a fat put in animal feed to give an energy boost. It was sold to 25 German feed manufacturers by Harles and Jentzsch, a farm in north Hamburg. Police executed a search on Wednesday at such farm and a subsidiary.

The European Union engaged in the issue and demanded Germany to reveal the full extent of the scandal. It is currently unclear if contaminated eggs and poultry were sold to citizens.

In addition, John Dalli, spokesperson for EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, said that the EU wants to know if contaminated meat or eggs exported to other EU member states, in specific to the Netherlands.

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia has shut down 139 farms as part of an investigation launched in order to target chicken feed producers for having used contaminated ingredients.

More than 1,000 chicken farms across Germany have been banned from selling eggs and poultry and over 8,000 chickens were culled as the cancer-related toxin was discovered in animal feed.
