Flood warning issued for upper North

CHIANG MAI: -- Villagers in Thailand's upper northern region have been warned to prepare for heavy rain and flash flooding over the next few days.

The Meteorological Department said on Friday there was a risk of heavy downpours and floods between 26-30 August, threatening low-lying villages in Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan and Chiang Mai.

Deputy Chiang Mai Governor Parinya Panthong has issued an urgent order for local officials at the district, subdistrict and the municipal levels to be on alert and to monitor the weather situation closely.

Last week's flash floods claimed 11 lives and caused substantial damages to property in many northern provinces
