Switching From An Immigrant B To A Tourist Visa

Featured Replies

I am looking for some input please. I have recently left my company, and my work permit will expire at the end of the month. It is my understanding that this will negate my current Immigrant B visa. I need to explore options for another visa while I sort out my employment situation. If I go to Cambodia or Laos, I have read that they are only giving out 15 day visas. Is this true? I'm not really looking to fly and would like to do this in the most painless way possible. I appreciate any advice I can get.

The work permit expiration itself doesn't make any difference, if on a one year "Extension of Stay" based on employment, your permission to stay ended upon termination. If here only on the "B" Visa, you can stay until your current permission to stay date. Also, if only staying on the visa, you leave the country and apply for a Tourist Visa at a Consulate. Probably should check with the Labor Department to make sure of the handling of the work permit.

Do you have a 90 day visa stay or an extension of stay from Immigration? If extension of stay it ends the day your work ends (not your work permit) so that would need to be addressed. If a 90 day visa entry there will not be an issue.

Vientiane, Laos and PP, Cambodia can issue tourist visas to allow a 60 day stay for most nationalities (currently free) and even two entry.

I have an extension of stay from immigration right now. My contract with the employer will end at the end of the month, so they will remove my work permit and indicate that my work period has ended with them at that point. Are there any concerns that I have to be aware of if I do the one day van trip to Cambodia? Is it simply a matter of crossing the border, paying for a Cambodian visa, and then recrossing the border? (What is that fee?) There is no fee on the return to Thailand? For some reason I was under the impression that there were only 15 day visas being offered for land entry... I really appreciate the help guys, thanks!

A land entry will only provide a 15 day visa exempt entry. You would have to apply at a Consulate outside of Thailand to obtain a tourist visa and that will normally require at least a one night stay.

But the visa application is currently free?

For tourist visas yes.
