Expiring Thai Passport With Maiden Name; Brand New Us Passport With Married Name

Hi everyone,

I have a situation when I have to renew my Thai passport in May to go back to Thailand in October this year. I have a brand new passport with my married last name. Now, I have a few questions. Please advice me.

1) At Thai consular here in America, will they allow me to renew my Thai passport with my maiden name (I don't want to change my name on Thai passport.) Can I just show them my valid Thai I.D. and my expiring Thai passport? And don't even mention my US citizenship? Is it possible?

2) When I come back in US with my brand new passport, there will be no stamps or visa or anything on it (I think). Will it be a problem?

My big concern is that Thai consulate will give me a problem about my name. Can they require me to change the name (because of my marriage, and other US documents, such as driving license, with my new name)?

Thank you in advance for every suggestion.

As I understand things, a Thai can legally keep her maiden name. Just present your valid Thai ID card and original Thai passport to the Royal Thai Embassy/Consulate for renewal. I am not commenting on the US passport or dual national status. You should exit and reenter the US using your US passport.

Name changed in one country and then not filing paperwork in the original country and hence they are unaware of the name-change...sounds iffy, but perhaps legal...

But it lands in the same area as 'marry in Thailand and not registering it in home-country, then traveling to another Asian country and marrying there again'...they will accept it since they have no proof of previous marriage, but...

Do not believe you would even have a choice to change passport name without change of ID card first. And it is no longer a requirement to change name in any case. You should have exit/entry card in your old passport so I would carry both to use for next entry - the only problem is normally not have that exit card. Without a card it may have to go to a supervisor but entry would still be allowed.

that's right.

My mothers Thai passport is still in her Maiden name, despite being married for 40+ years. Her Australian passport is in her married name however. She recently tried to renew her Thai passport in Australia using her married name, but was told that unless she went back to her Ampur in Bangkok to change her name hereself, the Thai passport will have to be in the maiden name.

As such, unless you have formally changed your name at the Ampur, your Thai passport will stay in your maiden name.
