Hello

Somebody tells me the law changed just now and foreigners are allowed to buy land and houses in their own name

Anybody heard about it??

Thanks

I can virtually assure you that if there were any significant changes in Thailand's land ownership laws for foreigners, it's all that anybody would be talking about 'round here. :o

That's why I decided to ask here if wether it was true or not..

I didn't believe that... thai mentality should have changed a lot during the past weeks

Have a nice evening

""thai mentality should have changed a lot during the past weeks""

Why?

Because thais don't want foreigners to owe thai land..... as they generally don't really like foreigners except when they provide money

If you have 40 million baht to spare, "welcome to home ownership in Thailand" :o

The lifting of the ban on farang ownership of houses and land (under certain conditions) has been foreshadowed by the relevant Minister. I forget where I read this but it was a recent announcement.

The latest I have heard is that farangs whether married or not can get mortgages to buy a house/land but I doubt they have relaxed the deal on ownership as such.

We really need SOLID FACTS when these things come up for discussion. Hearsay and rumours (rumors) are not constructive.

Bangkok Bank are offering home loans (not mortgages per-se) to foreigners, but only via their Singapore branch and only for condo. purchase. That, at least is a step in the right direction :o

With you 100% there, Crossy, but I'd be willing to bet a couple of bob on them fairly quickly broadening it to Brits, who seem to make up a large proportion of house purchasers in LOS. Presumably it's restricted to condos for reasons connected with ownership of land, security of tenure and so on.

I THINK any foreigner can apply, you just have to apply at the Singapore branch, there's a thread in the news clippings somewhere about it.

I didn't look too hard into this as our 'mortgage' is actually via the landowner (all in the family anyway). We opened a bank account in joint names, we deposit our monthly payment, she takes it out to pay for some land she's buying (actually her restaurant car park), the bank book is our record of payment.

I wouldn't recommend doing this with someone who was not well known to you or family though.
