PR team to study noise at airport

BANGKOK: -- The New Bangkok Interna-tional Airport (NBIA) plans to hire a team of professional public-relations experts to verify noise-pollution levels created by Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The move follows lobbying from a wealthy local community that claims it has been kept in the dark about the potential noise impact of the airport.

The decision to hire a professional team was disclosed yesterday by Somchai Sawasdeepon, NBIA project director. Somchai denied the decision was made in response to the community’s complaints. “It was in our strategic plan, but we have just recently implemented it,” he said.

Residents of Green Valley, a wealthy community some 10 kilometres from the new airport, said they first learned from The Nation that their residential area had been pinpointed as a location that was likely to be affected by noise from the airport.

Suchada Nanthapanichsakul, president of the Green Valley Homeowners Association, said her community had already set up a working group to monitor and discuss ways of minimising the impact on their community with the NBIA.

She said that yesterday was the first time that she had received direct information from the NBIA – the result of a call being made to Somchai.

Somchai said the NBIA had its own outreach team and had organised several meetings with groups who might be affected by the airport’s operations.

However, he admitted the team’s work had been limited.

According to NBIA research, Green Valley could be affected by noise levels of between 65 and 70 decibels - which Somchai said was not a critical level.

“The noise levels they will experience are equal to those experienced by individuals who live next to railways or roads,” he said.

Though a noise contour map is presented on the official NBIA website, it does not specify buildings and communities that will be affected by the airport.
