Spain and France detain 13 people in operation against ETA

2011-01-19 00:14:54 GMT+7 (ICT)

MADRID (BNO NEWS) - French and Spanish police on Tuesday arrested 13 people allegedly linked to separatist group ETA, newspaper ABC reported.

One of the detainees, Uriarte Igor López de Vicuña, was one of the two leaders of Ekin, an organization believed to transmit ETA's instructions to related groups, in the Basque province of Álava. The other one was arrested in September.

The detainees were charged for its participation in Ekin, considered the guardians of ETA's orthodoxy within the Basque National Liberation Movement, and other organizations as Askatasuna or leftwing nationalist Batasuna.

The charges were ordered by judge Fernando Grande-Marlaska, who last September had also sent another police operation against Ekin, which ended with nine arrests in Navarre and the Basque Country.

Spanish police also arrested four people accused of providing computer support and propaganda in favor of ETA. According to sources, those arrested are related to a website that denounces police operations against ETA's network and praises ETA prisoners.

Operations began early Tuesday in Pamplona and Navarre and this is the first large-scale operation since the separatist group announced on January 10 a ceasefire, making it permanent, general, and verifiable.

In less than 24 hours after the release, security forces arrested in France the alleged computer mastermind of ETA, Iraitz Guesalaga, while his girlfriend, Itxaso Urtiaga, was arrested in Spain.
