WASHINGTON (BNO NEWS) -- China and the United States agreed on Wednesday to establish a cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Chinese President Hu Jintao and his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama agreed during a meeting at the White House that both sides should strengthen their communication and coordination in international affairs and work together to counter global challenges.

Both sides confirmed that a sound China-U.S. relationship not only benefits the Asia-Pacific region, but the world as well.

"We should act in the fundamental interests of our two peoples and uphold the overall interests of world peace and development," said Hu on Monday before arriving in Washington.

Obama said after a meeting with Hu and business leaders that one of the goals was to "make sure that we break out of the old stereotype that China is taking U.S. manufacturing jobs. Our relationship is deeper than that."

Meanwhile, Hu said that China is engaged in efforts to boost its domestic spending, especially consumer spending, abroad. He also said that China welcomes U.S. companies.

Arriving in the U.S. capital Tuesday, President Hu is on his first state visit to the United States since Obama took office. He will also travel to Chicago on Thursday and wrap up his visit on Friday.

China and the United States have cooperated in a wide range of areas including economy and trade, energy, the environment, counter-terrorism, law enforcement and culture during the last two years.
