DETROIT, MICHIGAN (BNO NEWS) -- Four Detroit police officers, including one commander, were shot when a gunmen entered a police precinct and opened fire before he was shot and killed, local media reported Sunday.

Commander Brian Davis, who heads Detroit, Michigan's 6th precinct, which is located just west of Southfield Freeway, was reportedly undergoing surgery Sunday evening after receiving gunshot wounds in the hand and side, the Detroit News reported.

In addition, Officer David Anderson, who is part of the Law Enforcement Information Network, which handles criminal justice activity database, was shot in the head, but police sources told the paper that he is alert, talking, and moving his limbs.

Two other officers were shot at during the incident but were only gazed and suffered minor injuries.

According to initial reports, the gunman entered the precinct armed with a small shotgun at around 4:20 p.m. local time and opened fire. Officers in the building returned fire and killed the individual.

The majority of police precincts across the nation have no metal detectors and visitors are able to walk in and talk to officers. City and State police units cordoned off the building, and traffic was limited as authorities continue to investigate the incident.
