KARBALA, IRAQ (BNO NEWS) -- Two car bomb explosions rocked the Iraqi holy city of Karbala on Monday morning, killing at least seven people and injuring scores of others, reports said.

The National Iraqi News Agency (NINA) said the blasts happened around 9 a.m. local time, while giving no other details. The Xinhua news agency said the blasts had targeted Shiite pilgrims, killing at least seven people and injuring 18 others.

There was no official word about casualties, but the attacks happened just days after two explosions killed 33 people and injured more than 200 others in the central Iraqi city.

Karbala, which is the capital of Karbala Governorate, has a population of more than 570,000 people and is located about 100 kilometers (60 miles) southwest of Baghdad, the Iraqi capital.
