Bkk To Penang

Featured Replies

Hi again all ,

Anybody know the best way to travel to Penang in Malaysia from BKK ?

I suppose I am looking for the cheapest way really , time is not too much of a problem .

Is it possible to fly in , is there an airport there ?

If not , whats good , bus or train ? And would I have any problems crossing the border from Thailand into Malaysia to collect a visa , and then to return again ? I will have a UK passport , an almost out of date 1 year O visa and a Thai marriage certificate .

Thanking you ,

Sadako .

Yes, it's possible to fly, BKK-Penang.

Perhaps you can look into airasia.com

I don't know if you need to go via KL or not.

Thai airways or Malaysia airline would cost 10,000 baht

Otherwise, you can take an overnight train BKK-Haadyai, air con sleep class about 7-800 Baht then you find the Haadyai-Penang van transfer another 4 hours. Of course on the border they will require your passport to do the immigration thing. I don't remember the price, but not too expensive.

airasia is the best way to travel to penang. They have a direct flight there budget one.Checkout seat availability and prices at.

www.airasia.com

Flying there is the quickest and if you go with AirAsia the price is about the same as the train.

Ive done the trip by train you go from Bangkok on the International Express direct to Butterworth (the port opposite the island of Penang) cost is approx 2000 baht return.

The train leaves Bangkok at 3.15pm (if memory serves me right) and arrives at Butterworth the following day at about 1pm.

The bunks on the train are comfortable enough.......bottom one is better as it has window top bunk is a bit cramped.........they come round and make your bed up about 7pm fresh linen etc and you have your own curtain /light etc.

All in all not a bad trip if your not pushed for time and you get to see some of the countryside.

Try Air Asia.

From Bangkok to Penang International Airport

is about THB700/RM70.....one way.

For UK or Thai Passport, you will be given one month tourist

visa at Penang Immigration Airport on arrival.

A friendly word of advice for first time visitors.

Possession of certain amount of drugs or drugs traficking carries the

'mandatory ' death penalty.

Have a pleasant trip.

Just checked for price with AirAsia outward 10th October ... return 12th October................cheapest ticket is 899 baht one way by the time you add the tax and insurance on the end ticket price return is 3348 baht (plus 500 baht departure tax from Don Muang)...............so its quite a bit more than the train.
