President Obama signs disaster declaration for California to open federal funding

2011-01-27 05:26:50 GMT+7 (ICT)

WASHINGTON D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday signed a disaster declaration for California severe winter storms, flooding, and debris and mud flows which struck the region in December and early January.

By signing the declaration, Obama ordered Federal funding to supplement State, Tribal, and local recovery efforts in the area which was affected during the period of December 17, 2010, to January 4, 2011.

The aid will be provided to eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged due to natural disasters.

The eligible counties are Inyo, Kern, Kings, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Tulare. In addition, federal funding will be available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide.

Obama also announced that Sandy Coachman was appointed as the Federal Coordinating Officer for Federal recovery operations in the affected areas by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Additional designations may be made in the future if requested by the State and warranted by the results of further damage assessments.
