Al-Qaida gunmen kill 5 soldiers in ambush in eastern Yemen

2011-01-27 08:37:03 GMT+7 (ICT)

SANAA (BNO NEWS) -- Al-Qaida militants on Wednesday ambushed a security patrol in Yemen's eastern Hadramout province, killing at least five soldiers and injuring others, the Yemen Post reported.

The gunmen intercepted the patrol, fired on the soldiers, and looted YR 10 million (46 thousand dollar), according to a security official.

Few other details were immediately available.

On Tuesday, Yemeni security forces captured five al-Qaida militants following clashes in the southern province of Abyan. According to reports, one of the five captured militants was the most wanted al-Qaida member for perpetrating several criminal acts against security and army personnel.

Al-Qaida attacks against the army and the security forces have increased in Yemen's south and east provinces. Dozens including commanders and high-ranking officers have been killed and injured in ambushes, suicide attacks and direct raids against security patrols.

Washington has been pressuring the government to focus on fighting the Yemen-based al-Qaida regional wing.
